GOODBYE QUEENSLAND… cold, early morning – double the blankets!
Waking up early for a flight is one thing… waking up at 4am (after going to bed around 1:30am) in a very cold room (because you’re in an old colonial house with open wooden slats, and it’s winter!)… is frickin’ c-razy! So it’s now about 4:45am and I’m sitting outside with my big pack upon my back and waiting for the shuttle at the transit center (thankfully, just across the street)… and it’s slience – in both sound and lack of people presence – it’s eerie! I managed to find enjoyment during my 25-minute wait, as cars passed by with kayaks and surfboards atop – my sunrise surfing heroes! I LOVE IT!
Slept all the way to the airport (gotta love shuttles!)… took care of a few biz items in the terminal and then I was taking in gorgeous views from cloud-level above.
Arriving in Auckland quickly returned me back to the cold snap that we had encountered a few days earlier – bum deal! I settled into a great little hostel in Parnell that Kerstin referred me to – met their beautiful cat “Dude” (gorgeous Himalayan) chatted w/Ian about using the yoga studio in their front yard (this is TOO cool!), and then walked around for a short bit – to explore the reserves tucked behind the home (these are backyard canyons turned dog-walking reserve – fascinating idea!)… grabbed some food from the little mart and made dinner in the hostel… my ‘fine-dining’ days had abruptly come to a hault! (the expenses of OZ will destroy any backpacker budget!)
