QUEENSLAND, OZ - CAN YA HANDLE THE EXCITEMENT?!

As if day 1 on Fraser Island wasn’t incredible enough, we topped it off with a 2nd that was even more spectacular – IMAGINE THAT! Now we were watching sharks and whales swimming in the turquoise waters below... along with the lone surfer I referred to above... it’s amazing to watch the way people will gather in the possibility of witnessing a shark attack in person! You’re standing upon the edge of this cliff (no guard rails mind you) and just wanting so terribly to shout out to this guy below that the shark is only 2 waves back, or that the mantaray is below him! ‘Adrenaline observation deck’ is what they should name this place!!!

I swam in the cold, bubbly saltwater of the Champagne Pools – which are filled by the most recent crashing waves against the coral break wall that meats the oceanfront… tossing some beautifully striped fish into the pools… like floating in a homemade saltwater aquarium really (surface scuba diving without gear!) Of course this area gained its Aussie highlights when 3 of the more local gents strolled down with their stubbies and boardies and just sat at the water’s edge… classic!

Lunchtime! Why not hang out with our sandwich and juice box overlooking the ocean… and the humpback whales migrating in the distance! The first whales I spotted down at the pool proved to ‘disappear’ before anyone in the group saw them (luckily my guide saw them when I shouted out – otherwise they’d be thinking I was crazy not too long after when they didn’t resurface)… so, when Kerri & I were chillin’ up on the hill with our lunch and spotted them again, I called only to Mal (our guide)… and he was so impressed a few minutes later that he grabbed the rest of the group… grab your cameras folks!

The race against the tide back to the south end of the island proved to be very exciting. We had to take little track cuts behind the rocky points, as the water was completely covering our sand highway (YES, this is literally a highway (and landing strip,) and has speed limits and police!)
